Documentary <Shanghai Walkie Talkie>
Shanghai Walkie Talkie is a documentary project aiming to offer the audience a rather brief (definitely NOT comprehensive) introduction of Shanghai’s culture and history through a glimpse of the architectural landscape. I finished the project during my study at Communication University Zhejiang, majoring in Chinese broadcasting and anchoring arts.
The video’s offer the audience a historical-comparative understanding of Shanghai’s urbanization transformation, cultural adaptation, and those touching personal stories beneath.
The narrative will be in Chinese(Mandarin), don’t worry, click CC for English subtitles, you are all set, just scroll down︎︎︎.

Translation: What’s Shanghai in your eyes?
Walkie Talkie Shanghai #1 Skyscrappers
Shanghai has been the city hosting an enormous amount of skyscrapers as other Asian cities structured. The fast economic development in the city not only witnessed the outrageous lift of the skyline, but also the transformation of urbanization in some once being called "rural and vulgar" areas, for example, Pudong.
In this video, Chengfan will give you a short tour in the center of the Pudong area, where the skyscrapers shaped the city's identity and the dream for the future.
This video is associated with a cat-and-mouse game between the production team and flyover security guard behind the scene.

Walkie Talkie Shanghai #2 Melting and the contrast
Shanghai is a cultural melting pot that sits along the East coast. It traced back to Shanghai International Settlement, when the European colonization brought up the ingredient from Occident to Orient. The exotic lifestyle was melted with Shanghainese's local interpretation. It is also a city full of contrast, where the rich would easily encounter poor, classic blends with grassroots.
In this video, Chengfan will show you two examples illustrating such contrast and the melting moment he spots in Shanghai, from the Bund to the previous French concession.
Watch out for what's in his cloth!

Walkie Talkie Shanghai #3 Factory Transformation
This episode introduces two creative art parks, M50 and 1933 Old Millfun. Recorded as sewing factories and slaughterhouses in the past, now they are transformed into harbors where creativity could find its way home.
This episode also presents an interview with the artists-in-residence Zhu Jingyi.
Zhujingyi︎︎︎ is a well-known Chinese pop-art calligraphy artist who grows his style by writing internet memes in traditional Chinese calligraphy techniques.

Walkie Talkie Shanghai #4 Museums and the Arts
This episode focused on museums and the arts. Two museums, Long Museum West Bund︎︎︎ and Power Station of Art︎︎︎, were presented in the video. Both of them have a similarity in architectural history, from the abandoned factory to the revived art center.
The path they have taken in the past century reflects the city's ongoing transformation.
